I've lost count of how many times I've told myself "I need to get off campus more," only to end up DoorDash-ing for the third time that week.
As comfortable as campus life at Notre Dame can be, stepping out into South Bend and Mishawaka reveals so much local flavor and community waiting for us to experience. So this semester, I made it a mission to actually get off campus and find the spots worth knowing about.
Here's what I found: the best places to eat, unwind, and get some studying done—all just a short drive (or bus ride) from campus.
GOOD EATS
The Early Bird Eatery - 117 E Wayne St, South Bend, IN 46601
I found this downtown brunch spot serving elevated takes on breakfast classics, and everything is made with house-made and locally sourced ingredients. Whether it’s birthday brunches, a bite to eat after Sunday Mass with friends, or a place to bring visiting friends and family, The Early Bird Eatery has quickly become my favorite brunch spot: I highly recommend making it yours.
Student Tip: Free 2-hour parking is available in the Wayne Street Parking Garage above the restaurant.
The Prized Pig - 114 Lincolnway E, Mishawaka, IN 46544
When I'm craving a taste of home, I head to this casual Mishawaka barbecue spot—known for its smoked brisket, pulled pork, and chicken alongside scratch-made sides. I can confidently say that The Prized Pig serves up the closest thing to a taste of Texas in the area.
Student Tip: Free Wi-Fi is available, plus weekly specials like $1 wings on Wednesdays. Right now, they're offering free dinners through the Alive young-adult series—meals are provided free with registration for the Tuesday series running September 15-November 3, 2026.
Fiddler's Hearth - 127 N Main St, South Bend, IN 46601
This cozy downtown Celtic pub is where I go when I want food, live music, and community all in one place. Between the traditional Celtic atmosphere and the, almost constant,Irish music sessions, I always leave feeling like I've embraced my inner Irish for the night.
Student Tip: Board games and books are available inside, along with live music and outdoor dining. Free Wi-Fi, too.
NIGHT OUT
Make South Bend - 2228 E Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN 46615
I stumbled onto this community makerspace and art studio when I needed a break from campus stress, and it's become one of my favorite spots to decompress. Whether I'm trying rug tufting, crocheting, or candle making, it's the perfect way to unwind with friends.
Student tip: Make South Bend offers student-priced memberships starting at $40/month, with Wi-Fi, hot drinks, workspace, and access to makerspace tools included — plus discounts on classes, laser cutting, and 3D printing.
Humble Sparrow Art - 56431 Ellen Ave, Mishawaka, IN 46545
This small Mishawaka ceramics studio rotates between pottery and Bible journaling workshops depending on the week. The space is small enough that you end up actually talking to the people next to you, a nice change of pace if you're burnt out and want something different than a night out, while still meeting new people.
Art Bend - 608 S Eddy St, South Bend, IN 46615
This local art studio is one of my favorite places to take friends. Offering painting, crafting, and group creative experiences regularly and, occasionally, paint parties and Craftie Night, I've found there's something here for everyone.
Student Tip: Art Bend also has a Creative Circle membership with ongoing discounts on paint/craft experiences and Take-and-Make kits, plus early access to events and members-only opportunities.
STUDY SPOTS
Counterspell Cafe - 908 Portage Ave Ste 102, South Bend, IN 46616
When I need a warm, cozy spot to get off campus and get some work done, my first stop is always this specialty coffee shop on Portage Avenue. Their unique espresso-based drinks—my personal favorite being the maize latte—and wide variety of pastries make it easy to stay a while.
Student Tip: Free Wi-Fi is available.
Revenant Coffee Bar - 231 S Michigan St, South Bend, IN 46601
This specialty coffee bar and restaurant downtown has easily become my favorite spot for Mexican-inspired drinks and eats. With a full coffee bar and restaurant seating, I've used it for everything from a solo study session to brunch with friends.
Student Tip: Free Wi-Fi is available, and the café offers outdoor seating.
The Well Coffee House - 2410 E Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN 46615
This nonprofit, volunteer-run coffeehouse in South Bend's River Park neighborhood is where I go when I want community, and, equally as importantly, good coffee. Between board game nights, songwriter circles, and their free-to-use collection of books, it's become my favorite way to get to know the local community while winding down from a busy week.
